Ch. 2.2 - **Strategies for Overcoming Speech Anxiety**

Remember, as stated in blog Ch.1 Welcome To Public Speaking, it is rare for people to have a phobia of public speaking.  Even experienced speakers still get nervous.

Before the strategies are listed, we read a funny situation, that people would rather be in the casket than delivering the eulogy at a funeral!

There are two main reactions you may feel.  One of them is the anticipating reaction, the heightened emotional state that you experience before giving a speech.  The other is the confrontation reaction, the increase in anxiety as you begin to speak

We should try to channel the anxiety we feel to cause a higher state of readiness and confidence.  Try to get "psyched up" for the speech.

The following six steps can help you tap into this extra energy from speech anxiety and use it as an advantage.

1) Acknowledge your fears, but recognize that you can overcome them.

2) Think about what you are going to say and the effect you want to have on the audience.

3) Act confident, even if you are not.

4) Visualize in your mind what a successful speaker looks like.

5) Work carefully on the introduction so you will start the speech on a strong note.

6) End the speech on a strong note and pause for a second before returning to your seat.
